OUR HOME

  • My sons room makeover

I completed and decorated my sons room, just in time for October. We moved in our new house the last weekend in June. This room had nothing in it and was just waiting to be painted and decorated. (See the before photo below)

I chose to do a half wall, first painting the upper half “Chantilly Lace” by Benjamin More. Then after that was dry. I tapped off for my lower half, creating a straight line around the entire room. I painted the lower half “Limousine leather” by Glidden from Home Depot. (I took a picture of the paint can so you can save it and take to your Home Depot for reference and an exact match)

The reason I did 2 twin beds in his room was because these are the headboards we had in our last house, where he shared a room with his brother (If you want to do a larger bed I linked some options below.) I just love these headboards and I’m not ready to part with them. Plus this will work great for when he has friends stay the night we have an extra bed.

I also added curtains over the small window in the corner. I feel like curtains always make a room feel more put together and complete.

For bedding, I love the color of the quilted bedding at the end of his bed but they only came in queen size. So I just have them folded up for a cozy layered look, but they also absolutely could be used for extra warmth if needed. ( I have the bedding linked below)

  • Fall home details

Fall is my favorite! I wanted to share a few corners of my home and details as I pull out the pumpkins. Fall is such a feeling. Even here in Florida as we are still swimming and wearing shorts. I love all the warm colors of fall (leaves are actually falling here in Florida.) Plus for me it’s just the begin of all the holiday fun to come! I always start with true fall decor in September, leaf stems, pillows blankets, pumpkins etc. Then by about the third week in September I will start to add in some fun Halloween to share with you all.

These faux stems are one of my favorites (I linked them below.) I love the color, the matte texture and the realistic looking branches they have mixed in with them. I have 2 of the stems in this medium size pot. I also get question all the time about what size mirror I have on my mantle and it is the 3′. (Mirror linked below)

I love these white pumpkins that I found this year. They also have a pretty texture to them and a more realistic look. (linked below)

Little details and whimsical finds are my favorite. I like to keep things simple and add things I truly love.

    Happy fall friends!

  • Under the stair closet organization

We just moved into our Florida home last month and we are getting rooms put together, organized and settled.

Under the stairs is always an awkward closet, you put stuff in and it goes way to the back. The ceiling slants down so you hit your head climbing over things, just to get to the one thing you wanted. That’s if you even remember you have that one thing, because it’s been buried under other things for so long! I hated this closet in our last house, so even though I have a million other things I should be doing besides wallpapering a closet people won’t even see. My goal in this house is to make every inch of it work for us and no wasted space. So if you are going to organize something why not also make it cute! (That and I had left over wallpaper from our last house) So here is the before of my closet…

And here is the after, shelves really helped make the best use of this space…

The wallpaper also made a huge impact in this space. I linked it at the end of this post. This is not a peel and stick wallpaper so it requires wallpaper paste . This is what I used…

Everyone has different techniques for putting up wallpaper, and depending on what type of wallpaper it is, that can also require a different technique. This wallpaper is non-woven (not pre pasted) so I rolled the paste (I used the Roman brand from Home Depot) directly on the wall, with a paint roller. Then I personally also add a little paste to the back of my wallpaper with that same roller (my walls are really textured and this seemed to help.)

So FIRST thing you do is double check which way your pattern goes and then unroll your wallpaper, hold it up to the ceiling corner of the wall you are doing. (I always go left to right) leave about 4 inches extra above and at the bottom of your paper, where your ceiling edge starts and meets up at the floor. Because walls are always uneven and you don’t want it to be too short! I made this mistake in the past, you do not want it too short, but with extra you can just use a razor to cut the extra off the top and bottom at the end. Once you have your first strip measured from top to bottom take it down, lay it flat on the floor (I don’t have any adhesive going on yet at this point) roll out your next strip and match up your pattern to the first strip. Then cut the second strip (don’t forget to leave the extra 4inches top and bottom) once your second strip is cut you can put up the first strip on the wall. Now I paste the wall as I stated above and a little on my paper and start at the top left corner of the wall and add my strip of wallpaper smoothing my paper to the wall as I go (you can buy a wallpaper smoothing tool or use a clean paint roller to smooth also works) make sure you have no air bubbles. TIP: On textured walls I add thumb tacks to the top of my wallpaper sections on the corners to help hold it while it dries. Once it dries I remove the tacks and you never notice those tiny tack holes. Now repeat these steps for each strip of wallpaper, match up your next strip to the second strip cut it and then paste your second strip and continue doing this until your wall is done. At the end use your razor and cut off any extra paper at the top and bottom. (If you have lights or light switches you will also use your razor for those as you go.)

For storage I found some inexpensive shelving that worked perfect to get everything off the ground. I put all my extra decor so I could see it and use it instead of hiding it in bins in the garage and forgetting I even have it. I used seagrass baskets and wire baskets. I added a hook so that I can store bags, wreaths etc on them, I stored my bar cart, that I pull out for holidays and parties, down at the end where the closet narrows. I hung a rack for my essential oils, that I found at Michales a few years ago and added wooden slates to it so my oils wouldn’t tip over. And I put a hook for our keys in hopes my husband would stop losing his keys if he had a spot for them. I also found a black and white broom at Homegoods to match my closet, I was pretty excited about that!

I hope this inspires you to create an organized space in a part of your home that you may not be utilizing as well as you could. One project at a time, you can create a home you love.

  • How I painted the scallop wall

    WHAT YOU WILL NEED

    • 4” or 5” wooden embroidery hoop you only need one or the other, I bought both because I wasn’t sure what size I wanted my scallops, but I ended up using the 5” hoop.
    • Paint roller and paint pan
    • Short bristled angled paint brushes
    • Pencil
    • Painters tape
    • Level
    • Paint

    STEP 1

First I painted the upper half of my wall “Chantilly Lace” by Benjamin Moore from the top down to the height of the wall that I was going to paint my scallop half and then let that fully dry. If you aren’t painting the upper half skip that part and just figure out the height that you want to paint to and use a level to draw a straight line across your walls with your pencil. You can then use your painters tape and tape off your straight line that you will be painting the lower half up to.

    STEP 2

Use your paint roller and paint the walls from the lower half up to the taped line, (it took me two coats of paint) in your desired color. I used ”Waterscape” by Glidden from Home Depot, this is Sydnies current “favorite color” and she asked me to design her new room using it. This color matched her bedding perfectly.

    STEP 3

After your last coat of paint, remove the painters tape before it is completely dry to prevent against peeling.

    STEP 4

Now let’s start the cute scallops! I used a wooden embroidery hoop that I found at Michaels. I wasn’t sure what size I wanted my scallops so I bought both the 4” and 5” hoop. I ended using the 5” and popped out the inner hoop and used that. I then marked my hoop on the sides with my tape to create exactly where I wanted my half circle for my scallop. Then using the blue tape as my guide I traced on the inside of my hoop to create my half circles on the wall.

    TIP
For the corners I used a piece of foam paper I already had in my craft supplies at home, you could also use card stock, then trace a half circle using the embroidery hoop as your guide. I cut it out and was able
to bend it for my corners and trace that.

    STEP 5

Now let’s paint the cute scallops. This is where you will want to use the angle brushes with
short bristles to give you more precision. I used the larger angle brush to quickly fill in my scallops and then the smaller angle brush to paint right on my pencil line for a perfect line along my scallop.

It took me two coats of paint to fill in my scallops, so I repeated these steps twice. And you’re done! It’s easy just time consuming, but so worth it!

Now it’s time to decorate, my favorite part, so stayed tuned for another post of Sydnies room once its complete. HERE IS MY DESIGN BOARD I CREATED FOR HER ROOM .
